Friends, Bariatric surgery is the only effective treatment available for morbid obesity(BMI >40). Morbid obesity means disease causing obesity. Obesity may bring many diseases in our body like Diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, knee osteoarthritis, infertility, fatty liver/NASH, psychological diseases etc. So we need to try not to become extremely obese and if we have reached such state, we have to come out of it as soon as possible. You all must have acknowledged that even COVID-19 affected badly to those who were obese. So what are the treatment options for obesity- it depends on person’s age, BMI, comorbid conditions etc. Conventional methods of weight loss like Diet, exercise, life style modifications are sufficient for those who are overweight(BMI 25-30) and class 1 obese(BMI 30-35). Those people whose BMI is >35, they find is very difficult to achieve and maintain normal weight by diet and exercise. There are no effective medications available which can help to achieve more than 10 Kg weight loss in morbid obese people.
So friends the guidelines to choose Bariatric surgety are: if your BMI is >37.5 and you do not have any comorbid condition related to obesity OR your BMI is>32.5 and you have diseases related to obesity(mentioned above), you will definitely require bariatric surgery. Bariatric Surgery may be offered in case of uncontrolled Diabetes even in people having BMI>30. Bariatric surgery is usually done in people aged 18-65 years but even in younger and older people it can be done if absolutely necessary. We have done Bariatric surgery in 5 year old kid also and in 77 year old person also.
